Local History

An excellent source of local history is The Market Bosworth Society which has accumulated an impressive collection of information relating to the history of Market Bosworth and has produced a number of publications on local history.

The site of the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 is just a few miles south of Market Bosworth at Upton. This is where Richard III was killed and lost the crown and Henry VII became king. A Visitor Centre at Sutton Cheney - the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre - explains details of events that occurred on 22 August 1485. A pleasant walk from the centre leads to Shenton Station enabling the visitor to also enjoy a ride on the Shackerstone Steam Railway which has a stop at Market Bosworth Station on the way to Shackerstone.

The Battlefield Line Railway, owned and operated by the Shackerstone Railway Society, runs heritage trains from Shackerstone, Market Bosworth and Shenton Stations. Market Bosworth Station was reopened in 2011 and is about 15 minute walk from the centre of the town.
